Save Money With these Simple Checks

These are some very common issues that you can check before calling

Filter Maintenance

Before calling ensure that your air filter is clean. A dirty filter will not let your system work properly because it restricts airflow and allows the evaporator to get colder that it is designed for. The most common symptom in A/C mode is a frozen evaporator coil. Filters should generally be changed once a month, although there are homes that need more frequent filter changes and home that require fewer. Ensure that there is not an excessive number of closed vents, or furniture restricting vents or returns Just like a dirty filter, these restrictions in airflow can freeze up your system.

Drain Issues

If your thermostat is blank or your outside unit is not running check your drain pan at your indoor unit, if the pan is full of water this can mean that your drain is clogged. Once a pan get so full there is typically a safety that shuts down the unit to prevent water damage so, you will have to remove the water from the pan, a shop vac works well. You can try back flushing the drain with a water hose or using a pipe cleaner to clear the P-trap so the drain functions again. Another common issue is a tripped GFI circuit or faulty condensate pump. Go to your inside unit and look for your condensate pump then, pour water in the pump to ensure it is pumping water outside if your pump is not turning on then check the outlet its plugged into. If the GFI for that circuit is tripped then you will need to find the outlet with the little reset button so your pump will operate. Most systems have a safety that shuts down your system if the pump is not functioning to prevent water damage.

Checking The Breakers

If your thermostat is blank or your outdoor unit is not running that could also mean that the breaker has been tripped (Note that a tripped breaker is only 3/4 flipped back and will need to be turned off before it can me turned back on and an off breaker is flipped all the way.) Be very cautious when resetting a tripped breaker and if the breaker trips after resetting call a technician because further attempts to reset the breaker could severely damage your system.
